Tocolysis

Share

TCM theory suggests that during early pregnancy, there is often a requirement for fetal stabilization. There are many reasons for stabilization, such as having a cold uterus, insufficient Qi and blood, poor immunity, or having an unstable endometrium. These conditions may indicate the need for fetal stabilization.

If you experience frequent uterine contractions, ruptured amniotic fluid, vaginal bleeding, a feeling of the fetus descending, a strong tightness in the abdomen, or persistent lower back pain, it is recommended to rest in bed. However, if these symptoms persist, you should seek medical attention as soon as possible. Additionally, if there are conditions such as preeclampsia, placenta previa, a short cervical length, cervical incompetence, habitual miscarriage (having had three or more miscarriages), or insufficient amniotic fluid, it is advised to take early measures for fetal stabilization to ensure delivery at the appropriate time.

TCM Tocolysis Classification
Proper rest and sleep are fundamental principles for fetal stabilization. Consuming a light diet is also crucial for pregnant women. Additionally, if fetal stabilization is required in early pregnancy, a combination of TCM and Western medicine is recommended. The pregnant woman's condition may be caused by prior lifestyle habits, or influenced by diseases or past injuries and surgeries. Below are several common conditions, including Spleen and Kidney Deficiency, Energy and Blood Deficiency, Blood-Heat, and Blood Stagnation.

🔸Spleen and Kidney Deficiency
Symptoms: Back pain, unable to stand, dull pain in the abdomen, recurrent diarrhea
Bleeding or blood clots: Spotting in light red or brown

🔸Qi and Blood Deficiency
Symptoms: Dull pain in the abdomen with the sensation of the fetus descending
Bleeding or blood clots: Bleeding in pink, with varying amounts of blood

🔸Blood Heat
Symptoms: Dull pain and cramping in the lower abdomen, with dry mouth
Bleeding or blood clots: Bleeding in bright red

🔸Blood Stasis
Symptoms: Sharp pain in the lower abdomen, with obvious pain points
Bleeding or blood clots: Bleeding in dark red with possible clots

Tocolysis Precautions:
1. Avoid smoking or alcohol overconsumption: Pregnant women should avoid smoking and alcohol at all costs, as it could cause damage to fetal development.
2. Avoid lifting heavy objects: During pregnancy, the uterus presses on the pelvic floor and cavity. It is best to avoid lifting heavy objects or excessive physical labor to alleviate pressure on the mother and the fetus.
3. Routine prenatal checkups: Maintaining routine checkups is imperative for the doctor and mother to understand the baby's development. The doctor can answer questions and concerns, as well as plan for treatment if any abnormalities occur.
