Dysmenorrhea, more commonly known as period pain, is one of the biggest concerns for modern-day women. Symptoms like diarrhea, headaches, anxiety, etc. are often only relieved through painkillers, and yet it only eases the pain temporarily. TCM treatment for period pain targets each patient's condition to give medication accordingly. 

TCM Dysmenorrhea Classifications
Qi and Blood Deficiency
Causes: Poor spleen and stomach function, inadequate nutrition, recovery from severe illness 
Body symptoms: Dizziness, easily fatigued, lower back soreness, poor appetite
Pain symptoms: Pain occurs in the second half of menstruation, longer duration of pain
Menstrual blood: Light and pale red 

Qi and Blood Stagnation
Causes: Extreme stress and long-term anxiety 
Body symptoms: Easily anxious, breast tenderness 
Pain symptoms: Abdomen pain and bloating before period, pain affecting emotions 
Menstrual blood: Dark red and purple with blood clots 

Cold and Blood Stagnation
Causes: Preference for cold foods, little exercise with prolonged sitting or standing, weaker immunity
Body symptoms: Cold hands and feet, prone to swelling 
Pain symptoms: Menstrual pain in the lower abdomen, heat application can relieve pain
Menstrual blood: Darker red 

Daily reminders: 
Period pain, as common as it is, still has different forms of TCM treatment depending on each woman's constitution. It can be acupuncture or moxibustion to improve circulation, and the root cause may be another illness. Whatever the reason may be, it is still highly recommended to seek medical help if period pain persists.
