Uterine Fibroids

Share

Uterine fibroids, also known as leiomyomas or fibromas, are non-cancerous growths of muscle cells in the uterine muscle layer. Depending on their location, they can be classified into three types: subserosal fibroids, intramural fibroids, and submucosal fibroids.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, these are referred to as "Zhèngjiǎ" (癥瘕). Usually, uterine fibroids are asymptomatic unless they become large enough to press against the bladder or rectum, causing frequent urination or constipation. Submucosal fibroids may lead to heavy menstrual bleeding, which can significantly impact daily life.

Patients typically visit TCM clinics for fibroids due to heavy menstrual bleeding and anemia. Treatment involves replenishing the Qi and controlling bleeding during periods of heavy bleeding, while also using herbs to quicken the blood and transforming stasis to ensure complete shedding of the endometrial lining and prevent prolonged spotting. In non-bleeding periods, the focus shifts to correcting anemia and incorporating herbs that soften and dissipate masses to control the size of the fibroids.

Around 20-30% of women of childbearing age have uterine fibroids. The prevalence increases with age, affecting about 50% of women over 40. Despite fibroids potentially causing implantation difficulties and fertility issues, women need not be overly concerned. Utilizing a combination of Chinese herbal medicine and acupuncture to improve the uterine environment, successful pregnancy and childbirth are still achievable.
