A Journey of Hope: Ms. N's Story of Overcoming Heartbreak and Embracing New Life
Ms. N, originally from India, came to Taiwan following her husband who was working here. With a longing for a child, she sought assistance from NUWA TCM after experiencing multiple emotional and physical challenges throughout her IVF journey. Despite enduring heartbreaking setbacks, she finally received an unexpected blessing through the careful guidance of traditional Chinese medicine.
Enduring the Pain of Pre-eclampsia and Infant Loss
After several IVF attempts at a fertility center, Ms. N finally saw the baby’s heartbeat. However, at 16 weeks of pregnancy, she began experiencing symptoms of pre-eclampsia: high blood pressure, swelling, headaches, blurred vision, and seizures. At 25 weeks, she had a seizure at home, leading to an emergency C-section. Her baby, weighing just 500 grams, was placed in an incubator. Tragically, despite gaining weight to over 5,000 grams, the baby succumbed to multiple organ failure due to an infection. In July, through a recommendation from the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Taipei Medical University, she came to NUWA for treatment.
Initially, it was difficult to inquire about her traumatic pregnancy and infertility history due to her grief and language barriers. We began with a combination of Xiao Yao San and Gan Mai Da Zao Tang to alleviate her liver stagnation and spleen deficiency. After a month, her sleep and mood had improved.
Chinese Medicine Treatment and Basal Body Temperature Tracking Lead to a Successful Pregnancy
Following her period, we advised her to start tracking her basal body temperature (BBT). Initially, she was skeptical about the effectiveness of BBT tracking and Chinese medicine, especially since she was determined to try another embryo transfer. In late August, she experienced abdominal pain and brown discharge, which, in hindsight, aligned with the timing of implantation bleeding rather than her menstrual cycle. Despite this, her BBT remained elevated, and in early September, we encouraged her to take a pregnancy test. To her astonishment, two clear lines appeared on the test strip!
Having lost faith in her ability to conceive naturally, Ms. N found the entire experience surreal. During her IVF treatments, she suffered from severe swelling, anxiety, nausea, headaches, and insomnia. Now, she was pregnant naturally, and to her surprise, she barely experienced any nausea.
For over a month, the couple struggled to believe their good fortune, fearful of another pre-eclampsia episode. We provided thorough explanations and monitored their prenatal check-ups diligently, finally easing their worries in October. They then returned to India for a visit.
Returning to India for Childbirth After the Pandemic Eases
After returning to Taiwan in mid-October, Ms. N discussed her plans to give birth in India. With the pandemic restrictions easing and her husband able to travel between the two countries more freely, she decided that delivering in India, surrounded by her extensive family support system, would provide her and the baby with better care. She planned to return to India for the last trimester. Dr. Fu conducted a high-level ultrasound and early pre-eclampsia risk assessment, confirming that everything was progressing normally.
Taiwan’s high-quality healthcare system has long been a source of pride. The pandemic has highlighted the effectiveness of traditional Chinese medicine, and it has proven to be a valuable asset in improving fertility outcomes and strengthening international medical ties.
