Dr. Ching Hui Chen
I remember the first time I saw this patient from Hong Kong. She came in looking worried, carrying the medical records and information from three rounds of IVF and embryo treatment attempts at local hospitals. Her first egg retrieval in Hong Kong resulted in only one fertilized egg, which failed to implant. For the second and third retrievals, they tried different fertilization methods and even changed the culture medium, but still couldn’t achieve fertilization, leaving any embryos available for transfer.
The Hong Kong patient came to Taiwan with the mindset of trying one last time, expressing to me that this would be her final attempt at having a child. During her consultation at NUWA, she even inquired about the egg donation and egg bank "egg borrowing process."
The patient and her husband, along with the senior and assistant embryologists, held a small consultation meeting. The embryologists at NUWA carefully reviewed her previous embryo development data from Hong Kong, explained the situation, and proposed a treatment plan. This gave the patient some reassurance, but because of her past experiences, she didn’t have high hopes for success.
Five Embryos Successfully Fertilized at NUWA, and a Successful Pregnancy Test
On July 18, the patient began her treatment cycle when her period started. To everyone's surprise, the embryologists at NUWA successfully fertilized five embryos in one go, and three of them were viable for implantation. On the day of the egg retrieval and embryo transfer, the patient smiled for the first time. An even bigger surprise came on August 18, the day of the pregnancy test, when the strong double line on the test made her and her mother hug each other and cry with joy. Her elderly mother, who only speaks Cantonese, kept thanking everyone in Cantonese. Although we didn’t share a common language, our excitement and emotions were completely in sync. The dedication of the NUWA team made the month they spent in Taiwan worthwhile.
NUWA Lab Overcomes Challenges Others Couldn’t Solve
Later, we helped her arrange follow-up checkups at a local institution in Hong Kong. She boarded the plane hand-in-hand with her mother, carrying her medications with her. NUWA's embryos continue to grow and flourish all over the world, truly making it a source of pride for us all at NUWA Fertility Center!
