Common Questions About Sperm Donation Q&A

1. Can single women or lesbian couples use sperm donation to have a baby?
According to Taiwan's Artificial Reproduction Act, only heterosexual married couples are eligible for artificial reproduction. Single women or lesbian couples can undergo fertility-related tests in Taiwan, such as hysterosalpingography or hysteroscopy, and discuss egg freezing with a doctor. They can then pursue sperm donation through a legally authorized fertility center abroad to achieve their dream of having a child.

3. Can I request sperm from my brother, sibling, or friend?
No. According to Article 13 of Taiwan's Artificial Reproduction Act, to protect donor privacy and the rights of children born through donation, specific donors cannot be requested by recipient couples.

4. Can I know the donor's appearance?
In compliance with Article 13 of Taiwan's Artificial Reproduction Act, recipient couples cannot choose specific donors. However, fertility clinics can provide information on the donor's race, skin color, and blood type to help inform the couple’s decision.

5. If both my husband’s sperm and my eggs have issues, can we still use donation for artificial reproduction?
According to the Artificial Reproduction Act, recipient couples must meet the following conditions:
- Be deemed suitable for the procedure after evaluation.
- At least one partner must be diagnosed with infertility or a major genetic disease that poses risks for natural conception (unless exempted with approval from authorities).
- At least one partner must have healthy reproductive cells.
Therefore, if both sperm and egg are non-viable, donation-based treatment is not allowed.
